FCA Executive Director, Josh Slocum, to be Keynote Speaker at the FCANNJ 2018 Annual Conference on April 29
The second Annual Conference of FCANNJ will be held on April 29, 2018. Mr. Joshua Slocum, the Executive Director of the Funeral Consumers Alliance, the nationwide federation of funeral consumer groups, will speak on “Bringing Funeral Shopping into the 21st century”. While 80% of Americans use the Internet when searching for prices and products to compare, most funeral homes fail to put any price listings on their websites, preferring soft-spoken euphemisms about “caring, dignified service”
For one of a family’s most important and expensive purchases, funeral businesses deliberately keep their pricing information vague online, preferring that consumers encounter prices only in the salesman’s office.
Mr. Slocum’s presentation will discuss the results of FCA’s national surveys, showing how hard it is to compare prices and to obtain the information needed to plan a funeral online. The national FCA is petitioning the Federal Trade Commission to update the Funeral Rule to require funeral businesses to disclose their prices online.
Joshua Slocum joined the FCA staff in 2002 and became executive director in 2003. He has appeared as an expert commentator on funeral issues in national media such as 60 Minutes and the New York Times. On behalf of FCA’s nationwide federation of consumer information groups, Slocum has testified before Congress and helped to draft federal and state statutes protecting funeral consumers.
Slocum co-wrote, with Lisa Carlson, Final Rights: Reclaiming the American Way of Death. (2011, Upper Access Publishers.) Final Rights combines a journalistic investigation of the funeral industry and how consumers navigate it with practical information on how to avoid funeral fraud and financial exploitation.
The Conference will be held in the Parsippany Public Library, 449 Halsey Road (off Rt. 202) from 2-4 pm. It is free and open to the public and parking is available. There will a brief business meeting before our speaker and there will be time for questions and refreshments after his presentation.
