2017 Annual Conference Speaker will discuss the Death with Dignity movement and pending legislation in New Jersey
The first Annual Conference of FCANNJ will be held on April 30, 2017. The com- bined Board of Directors of the Memorial Societies of North Central and Northeast NJ extends a warm welcome to all our members and friends to join us for this occasion. Our guest speaker will be Ethan Andersen. Mr. Andersen, an Aid in Dying advocate, will discuss the philosophy, requirements, public opinion and status of the pending legislation in Trenton of the Aid in Dying for the Terminally Ill Act.
This Act, which is similar to laws in Washington State, Oregon and 4 other States and Washington DC, would provide an option for qualified terminally ill patients to legally request medical aid in dying.
The presentation will touch on the specifics of the legislation, and the various ideologies and groups in play. There will be a time for questions and answers and an opportunity for the participants to discuss the issue
Mr. Andersen became involved with the Death with Dignity movement after volunteering at St. Peter’s Hospital in New Brunswick for a year. He found himself dissatisfied with the quality of care and the limited quantity of options that terminally patients had available to them. His interest in advocacy was sparked after working on Cory Booker’s first Senatorial campaign. He finds advocacy both exciting and rewarding and intends to continue being an advocate in support of the Aid in Dying Act until it is signed into law.
The Conference will also be held in a new location this year – the Parsippany Public Library, 449 Halsey Road (off Rt.202) from 2 to 4 pm. It is free and open to the public and parking is available at the library. There will be a brief business meeting before our speaker and there will be refreshments and time for fellowship afterward.
